Marble has always stood for power and elevated status. The latest story on Explora traces how marble and other decorative stone were used in architecture in different eras.
Back in Antiquity, when the term was used to describe all polishable stone, marble was always an economic factor too, especially in the Mediterranean region. In the 19th century, the rediscovered buildings of the Ancient World inspired architects to use marble again. And in the modern age, marble was combined with concrete, steel and glass.
During video interviews, ETH Zurich professors Maarten Delbeke and Adam Caruso explain that marble is still used in contemporary architecture to this day, such as on Europaallee in Zurich.
