Palaeozoological collection

The collection includes important invertebrate holdings, many of which are the focus of intensive scientific research.

One rarity is the collection of roughly 1,000 fossilised insects from Öhningen. In particular, the so-called types, i.e. the specimens that Oswald Heer first used to describe the species, are popular study objects among researchers from all over the world.

Another unique collection is the ammonite collection from the iron oolite in the Herznach Formation. While this fossilised fauna has been studied extensively, its research potential has not been exhausted.
